When tolerance, geometry, and surface finish demand absolute precision, Industrial Tool and Die, Inc. (ITD) sets the standard. From our Santa Ana facility, we provide advanced ID/OD grinding services and surface grinding services engineered to achieve exacting dimensional accuracy and repeatable finishes across tools, molds, dies, jigs, fixtures, and precision components.

Our grinders refine geometry, restore concentricity, and perfect the surfaces that define part performance and longevity.

What We Grind and How We Hold It

Our Jones & Shipman ID/OD grinder (10″ × 18″ capacity) handles shafts, sleeves, bushings, and cylindrical bores with precise control of size, roundness, taper, and concentricity. We routinely grind:

  • Outside Diameters (OD): Precision shoulders, tapers, radii, and reliefs
  • Inside Diameters (ID): Bearing fits, seal lands, and precision bores
  • Features: Grooves, fillets, and blend radii that must track true to datum

Typical results: size tolerances to ±0.0002″, roundness within 0.0002″ TIR, and microfinishes suitable for press-fit and bearing applications, ideal for precision OD grinding and critical ID grinding services.

OD Grinding Process, Done Right

The OD grinding process we run is built around rigidity, thermal stability, and metrology:

  1. Pre-inspection & datum strategy to define size and runout stack-ups
  2. Dressed wheels matched to steel, tool steel, carbide, or specialty alloys
  3. Coolant management to minimize burn and stabilize growth
  4. In-process gauging to track taper, drift, and wheel wear
  5. Final inspection with precision gaging for size, geometry, and finish

This approach ensures our OD grinding services produce parts that assemble cleanly, wear predictably, and pass incoming inspection the first time.

Flat, Parallel, and Ready to Build

With eight modern surface grinders, we produce flat and parallel plates, inserts, and die components with tight flatness/parallelism and consistent edge condition. Our surface grinding services support:

  • Mold bases, cavity/core inserts, and wear plates
  • Die sections, stripper plates, retainers, and back-up plates
  • Precision machine details and fixture elements

Expect fine finishes, crisp edges, and controlled stock removal that reduces downstream handwork and speeds tool build timelines.

Built for Toolrooms and Production

Since 1967, our family-owned team has supported aerospace, automotive, medical, electronics, and commercial programs that cannot miss on quality. Industrial Tool and Die creates custom molds & inserts, stamping & trim dies, jigs & fixtures, precision machining, EDM, jig grinding/boring, and understands how ground components must function inside the larger tool or assembly. The result: parts that fit, seal, and align without rework.

Made & sourced in the USA. Work is performed by seasoned journeymen, many with 10–35+ years on the bench and at the grinder.

Materials & Finishes

  • Metals: A2, D2, S7, H13, P20, 420/440 SS, 17-4, 4140/4150, aluminum, copper alloys, carbide
  • Heat-Treated Components: Controlled grinding to avoid burn and preserve hardness profile
  • Finishes: Fine Ra for bearing/seal surfaces; flatness suitable for matched mold and die faces

Why ITD for ID/OD & Surface Grinding?

  • Tight tolerances, proven repeatability (ID/OD to ±0.0001″)
  • Capacity & speed with eight surface grinders and dedicated cylindrical capability
  • Toolmaker mindset that reduces fitting, spotting, and secondary ops
  • Single-source integration with EDM, jig grinding/boring, and CNC machining
