These processes allow us to accurately machine complex shapes and features into even the hardest of tool and diemaking materials, and finish them with precision toolmaking processes.

Many times in a production environment, conventional measuring equipment is incapable or inefficient for checking in-process and completed components with complex geometrical features. In this case a custom checking fixture and /or gaging or measuring system is required.

Pairing GibbsCAM virtual programming with our CNC machines we can also offer solid surfacing for cutting the most intricate tool designs. The advantage to this method of creating complex surface molds and tools is that there is no interpretation of surface profiles from two-dimensional drawings. Likewise, the tool is correct the first time without the common design discussions to clarify missing surface specifications from 2-D engineering prints.
This direct to machining center programming yields a considerable decrease in tooling time, while the complexity of the surface remains irrelevant to our ability to produce superior quality tools as compared with conventional moldmaking methods.
Industrial Tool and Die, Inc. can produce complex features in tool steel plates and mold bases using our Wire and Sinker EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines. The advantage to EDM is that shapes can be cut into hard tool steel without exotic cutting tools.
Wire EDM is used to make mold and die tools and tool parts in workpieces up to 15″ thick made from very hard tool steel materials that would be difficult to machine with cutting tools. Because of the flexibility of the wire and its guides, and the direct from CAD surface model CNC programming, we can accurately cut extremely intricate and complex shapes into the tool steel workpiece using Wire EDM.
Industrial Tool and Die, Inc. has the unique capability for an extremely high accuracy machining process called Jig Grinding and Jig Boring. Jig Grinding is a specialty process that allows us to grind complex geometrical shapes in our tools with extremely high precision and accuracy. Jig boring is a similar specialty machining process that allows toolmakers to produce precision holes on tools and dies with a high degree of positioning and size accuracy.
Both processes yield extremely high levels of machining accuracy of up to 0.0001″ in feature position and 0.0001″ in size. This level of precision allows the toolmaker to position hole and pin die systems almost perfectly to the reference surfaces and to the other interacting features. Likewise, the extremely smooth finishes obtained by Jig Boring are equally important to allow pin and hole die positioning systems to slide and otherwise interact flawlessly between the die halves over thousands of production cycles.
Industrial Tool and Die, Inc. has 42 years experience in the precision grinding of shafts, cylinders, cylindrical bores and flat surfaces using their high performance and fast ID/OD Grinder and surface grinding machines. Our shop is equipped with a Jones & Shipman ID/ OD Grinder with a 10″ x 18″ bed size.
This large format machine supports longer cylindrical parts than many centerless grinding machines, yet yields very close relationships between diameters. The result is extremely precise tooling components that Industrial Tool and Die, Inc employs to produce their niche of high end molds, tool, dies, jigs and fixtures.
